Which Forbo flooring product is right for me?

There are three types of marmoleum you can buy… the click or snap together variety (click), the glue down squares (MCT or DUAL TILE) or continuous roll sheet goods. They are all somewhat different and we recommend that you do a little research on our Product Overview page to be sure you are buying the best product for your long term needs.

What is Marmoleum and what is it made of?

Made entirely from natural ingredients like linseed oil pressed from the flax plant as well as natural pigments, stone dust, jute, pigments and wood fiber we know this will satisfy anyone with an aversion to synthetics like vinyl, pvc or acrylic.

How do I install Click Flooring Tiles and Planks?

Open the boxes and ideally let the product acclimate for a day or two as it may have to become dimensionally stable in its final location. Simply follow the instructions and click the full tile sections of the floor together. This is easier with a helper. The cut pieces can be protected on the face with masking tape and cut with a jigsaw. Download the Marmoleum Click Installation Guide.

Can I snap it together or click it together to make a checkerboard kitchen floor like the old black and white checkerboard look?

Yes, that is a very timeless look and can be achieved quite easily. Custom pattern layouts are easiest if done ahead of time with a piece of graph paper and some colored markers. Check out our Marmoleum Design Ideas page.

How do I install Marmoleum glue down tiles and sheet goods?

Tiles & Squares

This is slightly different than the traditional glue down PVC or VCT squares that most people are familiar with. It is not hard but it is not easy. The product needs to be set in the wet adhesive and rolled in order to stick properly. That means you cant glue the whole room and come back to set tiles later. It has to be done section by section and there is a slight learning curve. Tiles are easiest to install when quarter turned because they have a slight bevel on two edges.

Sheet Goods

Typically installed by a trained installer, the best installation will be done by a certified professional. Typically set wet and rolled, the joints can be fitted somewhat like traditional roll goods but the best installation uses a heat weld and filler rod system and is not at all simple or for the beginner or novice installer. There are certain properties to marmoleum that are very specific and need to be accounted for with sheet goods installations in order to preserve the product warranty. Refer to Forbo installation manual for installation specifics. Download the Marmoleum Glue Down Flooring Installation Guide.

How do I clean and maintain Marmoleum?

Just like any linoleum tile, it can be simply maintained by sweeping with a fine broom and spot cleaning. It is generally fine to damp mop the product, but the click flooring has a wood core and should only be mopped with a barely damp mop and only when absolutely necessary.

What do I clean Marmoleum with?

Forbo's balanced PH Cleaner is the best choice and we sell it on our Accessories page.

Does Marmoleum need refinishing occasionally?

Yes. We sell everything you need on our accessories page. Marmoleum may hold up fine for just one year or for fifteen years without maintenance of the finish. The average is probably five. The cleaner and better swept your floor is maintained, the less wear on the finish. Bringing grit from street shoes will speed up the wear of the finish. Reapplying the finish after a cleaning is especially easy and directions can be found in the Maintenance And Care Information guide.

How do you spell and pronounce Marmoleum?

M-A-R-M-O-L-E-U-M. It's much easier if you remember it is four syllables and pronounce it phonetically. MAR-MO-LEE-UM… that was easy. If you want to remember marbleized linoleum that might help.

Where can I get samples?

Just tell us where you want them sent by going to our FREE Samples Page.

Can I get Marmoleum at The Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, or other big box stores?

Those big box stores don't usually sell this product. When they did, our prices were still lower!

Can I use Marmoleum on my countertops?

Yes. Linoleum is a very pleasant countertop surface and we sell material for it. It does require some common sense about cutting on it and you should only use cleaners that are within the proper pH range.

Can I use Marmoleum as a wainscot panel or wall paneling?

Many of the fast food industries are using marmoleum as the wainscot paneling below the chair-rail in their dining areas today.

Can I take Marmoleum Click with me?

In the literal sense yes, but spiritually there are no known instances of anyone crossing over with their floor. Literally, many people, whether they are apartment dwellers, students or homeowners waiting for the dream home will install the snap together click product with the intention of taking it home or repurposing it later. If you know of an instance of Click being left to someone in a last will and testament, please let us know.

Can I use Marmoleum for a commercial or residential floor?

The product selection guide referenced on the Product Overview page is very helpful to select the best use or room application for your Forbo flooring product.

Can I have a custom insert, cutout, design or border made for my Marmoleum floor?

Standard borders from marmoleum are available and custom cut borders are also available. Please supply artwork and we will get you a price for your design. Currently only glue down tiles and squares can receive the borders and inset art treatments.

Where can I use borders and on which types of floors?

Even though there are some misleading statements and photos on the web about borders being used with click floors, the only way to spice up a click floor is with varieties of patterns using the 12x12 and 12x36 click product. Border patterns can be found on the Forbo website but they are to be used only in conjunction with the glue down tiles and sheet material of a similar gauge. Please call for pricing if you are interested in borders.

Can I use Marmoleum in my kitchen?

Yes. It is a wonderful kitchen floor selection. Resilient and beautiful, your marmoleum can last decades with just routine care and maintenance.

Can I use Marmoleum in my bathroom?

Yes, but the click floors are not for wet areas. The wood cores can expand and be damaged if exposed to too much water. Glue down tiles and sheet material can provide a more water resistant installation.

Can I use Marmoleum Click in the basement?

Yes. It is best to use a plastic vapor barrier under the snap together installation to protect it from mildly or occasionally damp floors. It is always best to verify the level of moisture in a concrete floor with a calcium chloride moisture test before any installation and its absolutely necessary with tile or sheet goods that is glued down. Isolating the marmoleum click with a proper vapor barrier will do the job. Its always best to maintain basement space with a dehumidifier to protect furniture, fabrics, and valuables anyway.

Can I use Marmoleum in the living room or bedroom?

Absolutely. It is perfect by itself but it can also be combined with throw or area rugs, it is a very nice floor for a living room and especially great in the bedroom where you may tend to go barefoot.

How many years or how long will it last?

We recently heard from an army base looking to replace their marmoleum floor in the barracks. It seemed that the first installation lasted 65 years. It is also true that the Rockettes dance floors have always been made of marmoleum. The last installation lasted thirty five years and was removed during a renovation and not because it was worn out! How is that for performance. You can get more information on living with the product in the Maintenance And Care Information guide.

Can I see this flooring on display in a local store?
